Because it is subject to consistent duress, the finish on wooden snow skis will ultimately deteriorate. You can breathe new life into your snow skis by refinishing them with the appropriate coatings. Before you start the application process, know the proper ways to prepare the skis, or you will have problems with absorption. In addition, identify the potential pitfalls before they happen, or you could end up destroying the very items you are attempting to rejuvenate.
Step One
Sand the snow skis, using a palm sander stocked with a low-grit sandpaper. Sand along with the wood grain until the skis appear dull.
Step Two
Replace the low-grit sandpaper with a fine 220-grit. Sand the skis until they feel smooth to the touch.
Step Three
Wipe sawdust from the snow skis, using sticky tack cloths.
Step Four
Place the snow skis on drop cloths. Protect portions of the skis you do not want stained by covering them with professional painter’s tape.
Step Five
Coat the sanded snow skis with oil-based stain, using a paintbrush, manufactured for use with oil paints. Apply only a light coat, or you will end up with drips and runs. Use clean rags to wipe the wet stain from the skis. Wait at least four hours for the skis to dry.
Step Six
Wash your paintbrush with mineral spirits. Pour some of the spirits in a small container, and swirl the paintbrush in the liquid. Set your paintbrush upright to dry.
Step Seven
Coat the stained snow skis with varnish, using the clean paintbrush. Wait a minimum of four hours for the skis to dry. Add a second coat of varnish. Wait a full day before using the skis.
