It pays to insulate your water pipes with sleeve foam insulation or by wrapping them with strips of fiberglass insulation. In the event that you have not done this, and a pipe has burst, here is a way to make a temporary repair.
Step One
A burst pipe should be removed and replaced as soon as possible. A clamp repair will solve the problem temporarily. First turn off the water supply. Thaw the pipe using a hair dryer or heat gun set at the lowest possible temperature. Keep the heat moving along the pipe until thawing is complete. Drain the pipe and completely dry the area of the split. You will need a SLEEVE REPAIR KIT. This will include a rubber sleeve, two clamps that fit around the pipe and screws to hold it in place.
Step Two
First smooth out any rough edges the break has left along the sides of the split. Use a metal file. Put the rubber sleeve around the pipe with the opening of the sleeve on the side of the pipe opposite the split. Holding the sleeve in place put one clamp over the break and the other on the opposite side. Insert the screws and tighten uniformly to hold the patch tightly in place.
Step Three
Insert the screws and tighten uniformly to hold the patch tightly in place. 3 Turn on the water and check the area around the patch for leaks. If necessary, tighten the screws until there is no further leaking. Replace the pipe as soon as possible and insulate to prevent further problems.
