The kitchen is one of the rooms in the house where people spend the most time. It isn’t just used for cooking these days. Kitchens are a place we socialise and even get work done. It’s important that it looks good and is functional for the people living in it! Unfortunately, some improvements can be difficult to make. Want to know the easiest ways to improve your kitchen? I reveal all here!

Add the Right Kind of Lighting

Your kitchen lighting should be a priority to you. As we do multiple things in the kitchen, you should have a few options when it comes to your lighting. Having task lighting is best over work surface, so you can easily cook food and see what you’re doing. Having dim lighting is all well and good when you want to relax, but when you’re trying to read a recipe it isn’t! Make sure you have the best lighting in your kitchen to ensure that it’s practical. You might even want to change your light fittings.

Change Your Shelf Liners

Think back to the last time you changed your shelf liners. Did you shudder? Time to do it again! Changing your shelf liners will not only make things look more attractive, it’ll also give you the opportunity to rearrange your knives and forks. Everything should be much more organised and easy to sort through after. The good news is, you don’t need to spend much at all on them either. I like to make them myself most of the time with leftover wallpaper! All I do is press a sheet of wallpaper inside of the draw or shelf so I know where I have to cut. You can get it spot on this way, no faffing around with a tape measure.

Change Hardware Like Handles and Faucets

Your hardware can make a big difference to the way your kitchen looks overall. Things like door handles and faucets can be changed with relative ease and look spectacular when finished. No need to completely renovate that kitchen.

Add More Storage

You can never have too much storage in the kitchen. Hidden storage is best, of course, but you can’t always do that. I like to make the most of my floorspace by adding shelving. Think of innovative ways you could add storage and make space.

Update Your Appliances

Old appliances just aren’t as good, or as good for the environment. Shiny new appliances are exciting and look much better! I can’t be the only one who gets excited over browsing cooker hoods, surely? It can be a bit expensive to replace all of your appliances, so consider doing it one at a time until you have everything you need. Don’t rush; it makes no sense to go into debt when you’re trying to make this process easier.

Add a Coat of Paint

Why not change the colour scheme? You could even paint a mural or add a funky piece of wallpaper into the mix! I love bright kitchens as they make me feel happier inside. You could even take a look at what different colours mean and then pick one that corresponds with how you’d like to feel in your kitchen. Bear in mind that different colors and patterns can create optical illusions. You can make walls look longer with stripes. You can make it look smaller with dark colours, and bigger with light colours. Bear that in mind too!

Put Fruit and Flowers on Display

Fruit and flowers are absolute musts in my kitchen! Fruit brightens the place up and adds life. It makes for a tasty snack too, of course. Flowers just look and smell great. I love picking flowers out of my garden and displaying them in a jug for a DIY freshly picked, authentic looking display.

Bake Some Cookies

You probably think I’ve gone mad, but trust me, this works. Did you know that people who view your kitchen, will automatically associate it with homeliness and yumminess thanks to the cookie smell? What better way to improve it?! You can also add them to a jar to snack from. Cookies improve everything, period.

Get More Organised

An unorganised kitchen can be a nightmare. Buy wire racks for the inside of your cupboards and arrange everything in there nicely. It’ll be much easier to grab things when you’re doing chores, you won’t even need to think about it.

Create a New Backsplash

The backsplash stops bits of food from sticking to the wall because it’s a wipe clean surface. I love creating a focal point with the backsplash. I always make it really noticeable with colored tiles arranged in a nice pattern. Here’s some inspiration to get you started!

Paper Your Cabinets

Don’t just line your shelves, paper your cabinets too. This is a great tip, especially if you have glass doors where you can see inside. Even if you don’t have glass doors, it’ll be a nice surprise every time someone opens the cupboards. Patterned wallpaper works a treat. You might actually need to use the tape measure here, but don’t let that put you off! It still shouldn’t take up much of your time or budget.

Replace Your Shades

After a while, kitchen window shades can begin to smell a bit musty. They can get covered in grime too, especially if you have a lot of cleaning to do in your kitchen. Replace your window shades and you’ll give your kitchen a new lease of life. It’s a good idea to have sheer shades in the summer to let in some natural light. Natural light will automatically make the kitchen feel like a happier, brighter place to be.

I hope you love these easy ways to improve your kitchen. Feel free to let me know how you used them and what the turnout was like! I’d also love to hear any ideas of your own you may have. You just can’t beat the feeling of satisfaction when you’ve improved your kitchen, DIY style with minimal fuss!
