To prevent damage to your area rugs and hard surface floors you need to have non a slip underpad. Here is how to get the proper pad for your rug.

Step One

You need to measure your rug width and lengthwise before going to buy the pad. DO NOT include the fringes in your measurement. Some stores have pre-cut pieces others can cut to size. Having your rugs measurements when you go shopping guarantees that you will get the right size.

Step Two

Since there are different qualities of rug pad made call your trusted area rug cleaners to get their recommendations on where to buy the best rug pad. The best places to buy rug pad is from stores that only specialize in flooring and area rugs. They will be the most knowledgeable in which pad you will need.

Step Three

Once you have bought the right pad (see tips for which pad works best) it needs to be trimmed 2 inches (5.1 cm) shorter than all four sides of your rug. If your rug is 5x8 your pad size should be 4'6"x7'6". Most pad is easily cut with scissors.

Step Four

To lay the pad and rug together will usually need 2 people unless your rug is small. Roll your rug up and put it aside, lay down the rug pad where you want the rug to be, keeping in mind that the rug pad is a bit smaller than rug.

Step Five

Move rug to where the pad is making sure it is going to lay over the pad by 2 inches (5.1 cm) on all sides. Once you have the rug straight slowly unroll it over the pad. For smaller rugs it can be easily to pick up rug and pad together if you needed to straighten it. For larger rugs you will need to roll the rug back up and reposition it correctly over the pad.

Step Six

Enjoy your rug knowing that your rug and floor are protected from damage
