If you need to hang a door in your home, you might not know where to start. Believe it or not, hanging a new door is one of the most straightforward jobs you can ever do. That means that it shouldn’t take you all that long to do at all. You can get a door from a local DIY store or order one online. Once you have your door, follow this easy guide.

Step 1: Measure the door

You should have ordered the right size for the frame, but just in case it’s a little off, you need to measure it again. You should hold the door up against the frame and see how it all lines up. You may need to get someone to help you with this step as it can be a little tricky.

Step 2: Mark the frame height on the edge

Once you see where the frame meets the door, you should use a pencil to mark it on the wood. Mark a line each end of the door so that it is clear to see what the size is. You should be 100% accurate when you do this part of the process. After all, you need the door to fit the frame perfectly. You should make sure that the marks are the same size as this will be important later. You will want to avoid making the gaps too large, or you could have a draft problem.

Step 3: Cut the door to the right size

If the size of the door is too large, you may need to cut or shave it down. You will need to leave a two millimetre gap between the door and the frame itself. This size a standard size, and one which most industry experts would follow. When sawing the door, make sure that you use safety goggles. Again, it might be worth enlisting the help of a friend so that everything goes to plan. You may need someone to hold the wood for you.

Step 4: Use wedges to support the door

Once you have sawed (and sanded down) the door, it is time to put it in place. You can use little wedges, or even door stops to prop the door up so that you can measure it properly. Use a coin to check that there is a gap between the frame and the door. Remember, the door needs the space to move.

Step 5: Mark position of hinge and fit

You should be able to see where the previous door hinges were on the frame. You should use these as a guide. Once you have lined up the door, you should make a mark where the hinges were. That way, you will know where to put the hinges on the door. Next, take the wood back to your worktop and screw the hinges to it. You might need to use an electric drill to get this job done fast.

Step 6: Fit the door into the frame

Next, it is a case of putting the door back in the same position and screwing the other side of the hinges to the frame. You should use the old hinge marks as a guide for this step.

Step 7: Get new locks

If the door is a front door, you will need to get new locks. Your best bet is to hire a locksmith to take care of this chore for you. Sites such as http://www.lockedout-locksmiths.co.uk/services/ have a wealth of locksmiths you can hire. Get someone out as soon as possible. That way, you can make sure that your premises are safe.

Step 8: Add decoration

The final thing you might like to do is decorate the door. These days, many people like bold colours when it comes to their doors. In fact, this idea is trendy at the moment. Get a glossy, waterproof paint and get painting. If you follow this guide, you’ll have a stunning new door in no time.
