The process of installing frameless glass balustrades requires a certain level of skill and dedication – there’s a lot more to it than, say, hanging a door. Done right, a glass balustrade adds a touch of elegance and beauty to a property, whether commercial or domestic. So let’s take a look at the steps required to install a frameless glass balustrade.
Step 1
The first step, should you require it, is to remove the existing balustrade. This means knocking out the rails, taking away nails and filling in the holes, so you’re dealing with a totally fresh and free space.
Step 2
Now you’ll want to get the measurements right. If you have a hand-rail running around the top of the glass, place it on the floor of the intended area, so ensure it’s the right size and mark the ground where the lower track will sit. If not, move to step 4.
Step 3
Move up the wall now, and mark precisely the height where the hand-rail will be. Use a spirit level for total accuracy. This is where the brackets or wall clamps must be placed, to hold the rail in position.
Step 4
Along the floor, hold the posts in position, and make sure that the glass will fit between each one. Adjust as required, and mark the final spot before drilling into place. Once screwed down, the posts should be secure and immoveable.
Step 5
The base of the posts can now be fitted with covers, for a smart and impressive sheen. Do this by simply slipping them over the posts, before adding the glass spacers; channels designed to hold the glass in place.
Step 6
Now it’s time to move to the glass. This process is best achieved with two pairs of hands, both wearing non-slip gloves. Carefully slide the glass along the channel to the bottom.
Step 7
With the glass in place, it’s time to check for any loose fittings and tighten everything up. This includes not just the screws securing the posts, but also glass panes themselves. If the glass shows any sign of movement, use wedges at the bottom of the channel to hold it in place.
Step 8
For added security when it comes to keeping the glass in its place, use metal-coloured silicone to fill the gaps between the glass and the post. Be careful not to overfill it.
Step 9
If your glass balustrade has a hand-rail, it’s time to put this in place, securing it over the top of the posts and glass. Once again, use metallic silicone to fill in the gaps between the glass and the hand-rail.
Step 10
Now it’s time to impress your neighbours and colleagues, with an enviable glass balustrade that looks incredible. Correctly installed, a glass balustrade will give a sleek, professional appearance to any commercial or domestic setting.
