3 Things You Must Do Before You Move House

0

Finding a new home to move into is always easier than the moving process itself is. However, there’s no reason to panic if you know what you’re doing. With this in mind, it will be helpful to have a checklist of things you should do before moving house. On your checklist, make sure you include the following:

Remember to Move Your Utilities

Although you may think, “Who’d forget to move their utilities?” you’d be surprised. So, once you’ve got your keys, call the utility companies and set up a date for when you’ll provide them with your meter readings and ask them to turn on the utilities in your new home. This is something that’s even more important when you’re moving into a home that’s been vacant or into a home you’ve just built. In such cases, you may need a service call.

Pack Smarter, Not Harder

Before your local removals company arrives you need to start packing. The best way to manage this is to set a number of boxes to pack each day so you’re not doing it all on the weekend before your move. After all, you’ll need energy so you can unpack later. As you pack, remember not to pack your wardrobe. Instead, have your professional moving company bring several wardrobe boxes with them on the day of the move. This way you can have them take the clothes right out of your closet, drop them and their hangers into these boxes, move them, then take the back out of the boxes and hang them in your new closet.

As you start packing, make sure you also throw out stuff you no longer need so it won’t overcrowd your new home. Even if you know you won’t have time to host a garage sale or drive the stuff to a charity shop, invite a charity to your home to pick the stuff up for you. This way you can simply place it on your front porch and be done with it.

When you’re moving into a new home that’s not too far away from your current home, consider taking some items to your new home yourself. Unpacking your bathroom and having clothes set aside for the next couple of days will help bring some normalcy to the chaos.

Make Moving Easier

If you have children and you’re saying goodbye to a home that has sentimental value for your family, try creating a Pinterest board with things you’re looking forward to doing in your new home. You may also want your children to make a video about their favourite part of their “old” home so you can preserve these memories. It’s also a good idea to visualise what life will be like in your new home by deciding where you’ll put some of your favourite pieces of décor ahead of time.

All of these things will make your move much easier. However, the sooner you unpack your belongings and get them organised in your new home, the sooner it will feel like home.
