Need an extra room but don’t have the ceiling space to build an entire floor? Then a mezzanine is the ideal way around this. Be it bedroom or office, a mezzanine is a great intermediate floor to rest between your main floors.
On top of this, large ceilings can sometimes look intimidating and vast. To break this up, a mezzanine can be an inviting area and provide additional and valuable floor space.
There are many things to consider when thinking about installing a mezzanine. It must be aesthetically pleasing as well as practical.
Start by locating a starting point. A place you know will work with your surroundings. Usually, this will be next to the wall. You must be able to stand up when on the mezzanine and when you are below it.
If installing this yourself, you will have along with your materials, a final plan and drawings of what it should look like. This should also instruct you in how to build your mezzanine.
If you are using a company. Sit back and relax.
Frame work is your first part. Without that, you have nothing to lay a floor on. And you’ll look a bit silly throwing planks of wood into the air.
Following the plan that will have been sent with you, follow the instructions on how to assemble and put together the columns. This will include anchoring columns using wedge anchors, fastening beams and jolts and bridging.
Next, with the structure all up and in front of you, your next step will be corrugated decking. These are heavy materials and should not be stacked up in one place, although it seems like an easier way to do things. Lay out the decking in several stacks as the framework may not be able to take all of the weight as of yet. Follow your final plans concerning decking.
Plywood is your next thing to combat. Lay this out similarly to the decking and follow the instructions on the final plans. Different decking’s mean different plywood to follow so use your instructions carefully.
You will have a ‘bar grating plan’ to help you execute this next step. Lay these materials as before and go for it. Your decking should help you to fasten this on to your framework.
There are more things to consider when building a mezzanine than just building it. Sound proofing, planning permission, air circulation and staircase choice (often a spiral staircase works best)
Enjoy your new floor!
