Stone pathways have a casual look and are easy to build for the beginner landscaper, but one frustrating aspect of stone pathways, is the prevalent weeds that continue to grow throughout the spring and summertime. Weeds growing in your pathway can look sloppy and ruin the curb appeal of your home, affecting it’s value. There are several steps you can take to keep the weeds under control.

Step One

Before laying your stone pathway, line the pathway with weed-blocking mat. This woven mat will prevent weeds from growing up through the stones for quite some time. Spray the ground with grass and weed killer before laying the weed mat. This will kill existing roots and spores laying latent under your walkway.

Step Two

Use newspapers for a more eco-friendly weed barrier before laying your stones. An inch or two of newspapers should block the weeds from growing for a couple of years. Just like the weed mat, spray grass and weed killer on the ground before laying the newspaper to kill hidden weed roots and spores.

Step Three

Spray your walkway with weed killer once it is laid right before springtime. This should eliminate or reduce the weeds that grow during the rainy season.

Step Four

For a more natural weed killer, pouring sugar onto the weeds encourages root rot and will kill weeds in a couple of days.
