Step One
Check the weather before varnishing the wood. Choose a day that is dry and warm. Heat and humidity will slow down the drying process and allow more time for dust and particles to settle on the wood.
Step Two
Adjust the indoor temperature. The temperature in the area you will be varnishing should be between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit (21.11 and 29.44 degrees Celsius). The varnish will dry too quickly and bubbles will form on the surface if the temperature is above 85 degrees Fahrenheit (29.44 degrees Celsius).

Step Five
Mix wood varnish with part pure turpentine. This thins the wood varnish and helps to seal the wood. You should only apply a thinned mixture as a first coat.
