Making a template of your counter top is not hard; in fact, it is simple to do. It is important to make a template so you will have a guide with precise measurements that will eliminate the need to measure everything twice, write the figures down and keep track of what goes where. All you do is trace cut-out areas of your old counter top and transfer them to the new counter top.
Remove everything from inside the cabinets. Also remove the drawers and doors from the cabinets.
Remove everything from the the counter top. This includes the sink, stove and other appliances that are set into the counter top. Make sure you turn off the electricity for that area, shut off the gas if you have a gas stove. Turn off the water and remove the plumbing.
Find some sheets of poster board or template plastic. Tape the poster board pieces together with masking tape.
Lay these sheets of taped poster board or template plastic over the counter top. If using the clear plastic template, it is easy to see the pattern that you will need to mark. Simply trace along the outside edge of the counter top and cut this section first.
Tape the poster board or plastic template in place so you can mark the pre-cut areas of your old counter top. The tape will keep the template from sliding on you. Trace these areas with a fine-point felt tip pen. After you have the areas marked you can write on the clear plastic or poster board things you may need to know, such as which section goes near the wall and which side is up.
Cut the marked areas out with a utility knife, or sharp scissors.
Lay this template onto the new counter top making sure you have it facing the right direction. Tape it in place and transfer the pattern to the new piece of counter top.
