A stippling brush is a very thick type of brush used to create a stippling effect when painting, giving paint an aged look. Stippling brushes are often expensive and easy to damage. If special care is not taken, such as rinsing after each use, they can lose their ability to create the stippling effect. Instead of spending the extra money on a stippling brush, you can make one yourself using inexpensive materials.
Step One
Purchase three 4-inch China bristle brushes from any home-improvement or arts and crafts store. They should be identical in size.
Step Two
Place all three brushes together on top of each other -- make sure that the bristles of each brush are level with one another.
Step Three
Use masking tape to tape the brushes together. Start from the metal part that holds the bristles of the brushes and wrap the masking tape around the brushes several times, moving down toward the handle. Wrap the handle with masking tape as well. You can now use this brush to achieve a stippling effect with paint.
