There are three main types of electric saw available to the DIYer: circular blades, reciprocating blades and continuous bands. Electric saws range in sizes from hand-held devices to table-mounted and vary in blades usage. Electric saws are used in numerous industries including industrial, construction, forestry, carpentry and others. Electric saws are safe to use due to their lighter construction and ability to cut quickly. Electric saw blades must be sharpened and oiled to maintain their optimum cutting ability.

Step One

Blade Overview of Electric Saws - The materials used in making electric saw types include steel, carbide and even diamond. However, one main characteristic of electric saws is the design and number of cutting teeth the blades possess. Saw blades with scores of teeth generally produce a smooth cut, while blades with fewer teeth tugs materials through faster. Blade teeth can range anywhere from 24 to 80 depending on what you want cut. The shape of the teeth also plays a major role in cutting. Flat Top design is one of the most widely used for cutting wood. Alternate Top Bevel (ATB) provides smoother cuts for natural wood and plywood. Triple Chip Grind (TCG) performs well in cutting metal and plastic. High Alternate Top Bevel (HiATB) is used for extra-fine cutting applications.

Step Two

Circular Blade Saws Types - Electric circular saws are generally used for cutting wood, metal, ceramic tiles and other soft materials. However, there are several circular saws to choose from to complete a specific task. Table saws are commonly used for cutting wood and are mounted on work desks. Radial arm saws allows the user to precisely cut materials and are used for fine-cutting applications including picture framing. Rotary spiral saws are commonly used for construction purposes and are able to cut drywall and other coarse materials. Rotary saw blades can also be used as an attachment for hand-held rotary tools. An electric mitre saw can be used either for home use or professional work. Basic mitre saws are used for simple cutting tasks and are the cheapest to purchase. Compound and sliding compound mitre saws offer more options in cutting ability. Other electric circular saws are concrete and abrasive circular.

Step Three

Reciprocating Blade Saw Types - Reciprocating electric saw types are commonly used in construction, building demolition, plumbing and electrical industries. They are able to cut through metal, wood, fibreglass and stucco. Reciprocating saws range in price from under £32 to over £195, depending on what task you intend to use it for. However, home users can also use a jigsaw to cut wood, thin metal and ceramic tile in straight or curved paths.

Step Four

Continuous Band Saw Type - Continuous band saws are industrial electric saw types and are able to cut through thick wood, steel, brass, aluminium, iron, copper, steel and other metals. These saws are categorised in two different classes, horizontal or vertical. The blades on these saw types come in sizes ranging from 50 to 500 feet and are made from special alloy steels. Continuous band saws speeds range between 50 to 2,000 feeds per minute.
