Internet security is an important part of modern computing. Not only must one worry about protecting the data a computer contains–one must also prevent users from accessing data and content that they feel is compromising or inappropriate. A computer’s administrator can take several steps to block inappropriate websites that children or other users may be attempting to view.
Step One
Blocking Site Access With Internet Explorer -Uninstall any web browsers on your computer other than Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is often the easiest browser to use to limit web site access.
Step Two
Open Internet Explorer, click “Tools,” then select “Internet Options.”
Step Three
Select the “Privacy” tab and click “Sites.”
Step Four
Enter the website you wish to block in the field provided; click “Block,” and then choose “OK.”
Step Five
Block Websites From Any Browser -Click “Start,” then select “All Programs.” Choose “Accessories,” then “Command Prompt.”
Step Six
Type the following string into the DOS command prompt produced by Step 1: “notepad C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc/hosts.”
Step Seven
In the notepad, find the line “127.0.0.1 localhost.”
Step Eight
Type “127.0.0.1,” followed by the name of any website you wish to block under “127.0.0.1 localhost.” For instance, if you wanted to block cnn.com, you would type “127.0.0.1 www.cnn.com” underneath “127.0.0.1 localhost.”
Step Nine
Save the altered notepad under “File,” and close it. You can go back to this notepad at a later time and delete the strings you entered to enable the disabled sties.
