The prospect of a great looking garden is an enticing one. However, it’s a lot of work – much of which can be back breaking stuff. Recently, a gardening professional that I know told me to spend at least a few hours a week maintaining things to keep it in order. I laughed. Who has that much time available? However, he also revealed some trade secrets to me which I’ll share with you know. Because apparently, you can make things a lot easier for yourself. Here are some great ideas for the lazy gardener.
Cut out the watering can
How much time do you spend watering your beautiful garden plants and shrubs? Well, if you want to get out of that particular task, you have a magnificent excuse now. Plants – like many humans – can get lazy, particularly when it comes to water. They start to rely on their bonus hosing and don’t work as hard to drive their roots down to moisture. The result is a weaker plant that won’t establish itself as strongly as an unwatered plant. You will have to water them occasionally, but not as much as many people believe. Which means more free time for you!
Move your fruit trees
Fruit trees are beautiful when they blossom, delicious when they bear fruit, and a pain in the behind when they start to drop. Fruit goes everywhere if you don’t pick it, so if you have a successful tree in your garden, you are going to have your work cut out. Rotting fruit on brickwork pathways are a definite no-go for the lazy gardener – and for any sane person. Not only does it smell and get stuck in your shoes, but it is also so slippy it can be classed as a health hazard. However, moving your fruit trees to somewhere more suitable will cut your cleaning time in half – or more.
Lose your grass
As much as a great lawn is a thing of great beauty, it requires a lot of upkeep and work. If you leave it for a couple of weeks during a rainy summer, you could be looking at a jungle rather than a back garden. However, one modern alternative worth thinking about is artificial grass. It is soft, realistic, and best of all requires no maintenance whatsoever. It’s perfect for those of you with families, and it also has drainage for rainwater. That means you won’t have water continually running off your property like you do if you have paving installed.
A hammock
Now, with all that work out of the way – finally – you can get down to some serious relaxing. And the best way to do it is to get a hammock. There is not much that is better in life than lying back on a peaceful summer’s evening, suspended in mid-air. It’s true you haven’t really earned it through gardening, but your genius solutions deserve some credit, too. So get yourself a hammock, pour yourself a beer or glass of wine, and relax to the sounds of the birds roosting. It’s the perfect end to a day for any lazy gardener.
