Having yellow teeth can be embarrassing, and many people with the condition may have a hard time removing stains and discoloration after years of tea or coffee drinking, cigarette smoking, bad oral hygiene care or simply not being able to make it to the dentist for their yearly examination. But there are some cost-effective ways to get rid of yellow teeth.
Step One
Make your own teeth-whitening system by using the malic acid method. (Malic acid is an astringent to remove tooth discoloration.) All you need to have is one strawberry and baking soda. This won’t necessarily take the place of the dentist or teeth-whitening products, but it will improve the appearance of your teeth. Simply crush up a strawberry with 1.5 tablespoons of baking soda and apply it to teeth for five minutes. Brush and rinse the teeth, then floss to rid teeth of strawberry seeds.
Step Two
Use over-the-counter peroxide like a mouthwash after you have brushed your teeth. The peroxide will help reduce stained teeth; it’s a common ingredient in most toothpastes and teeth whiteners. Take note, however, that while peroxide is safe on tooth enamel, it can irritate the gums and cause tooth sensitivity over time. Also, don’t swallow it.
Step Three
Eat more raw, crunchy veggies like carrots, broccoli, cucumbers and celery because their ingredients are natural abrasives that scrub away stains in the teeth.
Step Four
Buy safe, economical teeth-whitening products at your pharmacy. The companies that make well-known oral care products also make teeth-whitening products and strips.
Step Five
Eliminate severe discoloration and yellow teeth by consulting your dentist. Teeth-whitening options include laser teeth whitening. Laser teeth whitening is expensive, but the results are long lasting.
Step Six
Try to schedule yearly dental examinations to help prevent other dental issues. Simply brushing teeth after every meal and flossing at least twice daily will also cut down on discolored teeth. Reduce coffee and tea drinking as well as cigarette smoking.
Teeth discolouration can occur for a number of reasons and, once the damage is done, it can be quite difficult to get rid of. If you have followed the steps outlined above and you’re still unhappy with the appearance of your teeth, one alternative option is to invest in porcelain veneers. A veneer is a small porcelain shell that can be used to cover the surface of a tooth and they offer a long-term solution for discolouration – effectively hiding the yellow hue and disguising any imperfections.
