If you have an old, neglected apple tree that doesn’t produce much fruit, you can take steps to restore its fruit production and health. Careful annual pruning will reduce the height of the tree, boost fruit production and spur new growth of the tree. This restorative pruning program must be undertaken over the course of several years; if you make every change at once you’ll overwhelm the old apple tree. For best results, pruning should be done annually in the late winter, after danger of frost but before the tree has started growing for the season.
