Water pumps, whether hand cranked or fuel powered, use a crankshaft and piston to drive the water from the well up and into the hoses. When these parts of the pumps go dry and lose the lubrication on the shaft, squeaking results. In addition to the annoying squeaking noises, the pump’s crankshaft and piston will wear out, requiring expensive replacement parts. Treat the squeak with a healthy dose of lubricants to keep water flowing with no annoyance from the noise.
Step Two
Smear a generous portion of waterproof grease onto the piston shaft and the crankshaft of the pump. These are the solid rods that are moved by the pump handle or engine drive.
Step Three
Pump up and down several times to work the grease over the shafts completely. If it is a power pump, turn it on to get the grease worked over the shafts.
Step Four
Leave excess grease surrounding the shaft housings and pump shafts. Over time it will get worked into the mechanisms.
