Getting the fastest Internet service is not always a black and white issue. Companies that offer Internet service can have different levels of service and different speed capabilities in different areas of the country. This means that your friend in another state could use an Internet service provider and get lots of speed, but that same provider might not be able to offer you the same level of service. Investigate your options to find the fastest Internet service in your area.

Find out who the major Internet providers are in your area. A service like America Connects.net allows you to search your address and find out your Internet options. Some of the major companies include Time Warner Cable, Vonage, Verizon, Comcast, AT&T, Dish Network and Cox.

Contact each company directly to ask about the Internet speed options that are available. The fastest options for the Internet are companies that can offer a cable, DSL or fixed wireless connection.

Ask about the actual Internet speed. Speed is measured in kilobytes per second, or Kbps, or megabytes per second, or Mbps, and 1 Mbps is equivalent to approximately 1,000 Kbps. Fixed wireless, for example, can reach speeds of 256 Kbps to 10 Mbps. DSL connections can range from 128 Kbps to 1.54 Mbps, and a cable connection can reach speeds from 500 Kbps to 2 Mbps.

Use the National Broadband Map at BroadbandMap.gov to find out more about the speeds of the Internet providers who offer coverage in your area. This is a non-biased source of information. Compare the information listed on this site to what was provided to you by each Internet provider to help you make a more informed decision about which one is the fastest.
