Almost all carpenters use a hand saw at one time or another. Hand saws come with different sawtooth configurations and blade lengths to cut different types of wood. Always use caution and wear safety equipment when you are using a hand saw.
Step One
Choose the right saw for the job. A hand saw with large, widely spaced teeth is good for cutting soft woods like pine. A hand saw with small, fine teeth is best for cutting hard woods like oak. As a rule, use smaller saw teeth on hard wood for an efficient cut.
Step Two
Measure and mark the wood before you make a cut. Use a carpenter's pencil to mark the edge of the wood. Use a ruler or straight edge to draw perfectly straight lines that you can follow while you're sawing.
Step Three
Position the middle of your sawblade on the mark you made with the carpenter's pencil. Push the saw slightly down and forward, applying even pressure throughout the cutting stroke. Pull the saw back evenly, stopping a few inches before the end of the saw.
Step Four
Continue to push and pull the saw blade with slight downward pressure as you're making the cut. Monitor your tempo and don't press down too hard and you'll make a nice, clean cut.
