Scones are a bread that’s like a biscuit. People often cut them into wedge shapes before baking, but you can also make scones as a loaf. The way you prepare the dough for your scones determines the outcome of this quick bread.
Combine the sugar, flour, salt and baking powder in a mixing bowl. Cut the butter into the mixture until you get a crumbly consistency.
Add an egg and milk or cream to the mixture. Stir until the dough for your scones pulls away from the edges of the bowl.
Drop the dough onto a floured surface. Knead your dough no more than ten times to prevent chewy scones.
Roll out your dough until it's a 1/2-inch thick circle. Cut the dough into wedges or use cookie cutters to make shaped scones.
Place the dough onto an ungreased cookie sheet. You can place the scones close to one another since they don't spread out much during baking.
Bake your scones at 400 degrees F for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove your scones when they're lightly browned.
