For those campers who have a fear of spiders, keeping your campsite free of spiders can make the difference between an enjoyable and memorable adventure and a traumatising trip outdoors. Although most spiders that a camper might encounter are not poisonous and completely harmless, there are some spiders whose bite can be life-threatening. There are some strategies campers can use to help keep their campsites free of spiders so that they don’t have to worry about annoying bites or trips to the GP.
Step One
Check all of your camping equipment that is stored in a garage, shed or outdoor location for spiders before you leave for your camping trip. Don't forget that spiders live everywhere, not just at camping sites or national parks. Checking your equipment before you leave will help ensure that you don't accidentally bring spiders along on your camping trip.
Step Two
Set up camp away from standing water, sources of light and densely forested areas if possible. These environments attract bugs that spiders eat, thus also attracting spiders to your campsite. Although when camping, these environments may be hard to avoid, try your best to place your campsite as far away from these locations as you can.
Step Three
Close all items of food and store them away in a location where bugs will not be attracted to them, such as in a cooler or sealed container. Food items, cans of sugary pop and other drinks attract bugs, which in turn attract spiders to your campsite. Dispose of all food waste and rubbish in an appropriate location away from your tent.
Step Four
Purchase bug sprays or bug repellent candles to ward off the bugs that attract spiders. Spray bug spray around your campsite or place bug repellent candles in various areas around the perimeter of your campsite in order to prevent bugs from going near your space.
Step Five
Carefully check your tent or camper for small holes and cracks where a spider could enter your camping equipment. Close up these cracks or use heavy-duty tape to cover the holes in order to ensure that the spiders do not crawl into areas where you will be sleeping.
