A quick way to give a new look to the bathroom is through fixture replacement. The bath taps are an easy item to install. You may need a special pipe wrench or screw remover if the taps have been on for decades. Also, bath taps occasionally strip at the threads and won’t turn off adequately. This issue can be fixed if necessary. Bath taps come in single or mixer type. Make certain to measure the pipe so you get the correct size tap.
Step One
Turn the water supply off. Use the five-in-one tool or a flat-head screwdriver to pop the plastic top off each tap. Use the Phillips-head screwdriver to unscrew the taps. The taps should just pull off after the screw is out. If it is fighting you, use the wrench to pry it off. Some taps will not have the plastic top, and, on occasion, the screw holding the tap on is a flat-head.
Step Two
Measure the pipe the taps were on. You are measuring from edge to edge to find the diameter of the pipe. You need an accurate measurement because the taps come in different sizes. You will need the information at the hardware store both for buying the right size replacement taps, but also for a new washer. This is a good time to clean the threads on the pipes. Use the wire brush and scrub gently to remove lime and built-up debris.
Step Three
Grease the pipes that come from the wall. Put plumber's tape around the threads at the end of the pipes. This will prevent any leaks and ensure a tight seal. Place the washer over the tip of the pipe and then the new tap.
Step Four
Screw a Phillips-head screw into the top of the tap to secure it to the pipe. Place a plastic cover over the screw and pop it on. Turn the taps on and test your work, making sure you put hot on the left and cold on the right.
