Rock climbing is a strenuous sport that requires your concentration. So the clothing you wear needs to be functional, flexible, durable and comfortable. Naturally, unless you’re scaling an indoor rock-climbing wall, the sport takes place in the great outdoors. So keep the weather in mind.
Step One
Wear long spandex exercise pants, loose-fitting pants or sweats on your legs in cooler weather. Don’t wear tight jeans, which will restrict your range of movement and make you uncomfortable.
Step Two
Wear a few light layers on your upper body in cool weather, along with a windbreaker or light jacket. It’s important to choose items made of breathable fabrics that wick moisture away from your body.
Step Three
Wear a ski hat and gloves in cool weather. You can always shed these items if you get too warm while climbing.
Step Four
Wear bicycle shorts or walking shorts in warmer weather. Keep in mind that running shorts are too short. A T-shirt or tank top will be fine for climbing and keep you cool enough.
Step Five
Wear no socks or very thin socks. Wear sneakers or light trail shoes, but don’t wear heavy-duty hiking boots. For anyone who’s more than a novice, you can rent or purchase specially-made climbing shoes, which run the gamut in terms of style and function.
Step Six
Disregard bringing gear, including helmets and harnesses, if you are doing the climb with a reputable adventure program or clinic. Most experts will provide you with those. If you’re climbing with friends or on your own, purchase or rent the equipment.
Step Seven
Learn to climb from individuals who are experts as rock climbing can be a dangerous sport. Use only the proper equipment. You will need all the protection you can get in order to ensure your safety.
Step Eight
Pack insect repellent, sun screen and at least two liters of water. You won’t be carrying these on the actual climb, but they are useful and you will be thankful you have them before and after you’ve scaled the rock.
