Hello! I’m Aaron, I own n3rdabl3.co.uk a gaming and technology site full of news and reviews. Each week I’ll be bringing a little piece of that with me here on Let’s Fix It in the form of gaming guides, Easter eggs, hints and tips, and secrets.
This week I’m going to touch upon one of this years most anticipated gaming titles, Grand Theft Auto V. The game has broken 7 Guinness World Records since it’s launch on September 17 and remains to be one of the top sellers in the UK charts. The game is well known for it’s tongue in cheek humour and controversial gameplay, but it’s often also filled with virtual “nods” to movies, TV shows, and other video games hidden throughout and in this post I’m going to pick out my top five virtual “nods”.
1. Wear the jacket Ryan Gosling wore in the movie Drive.
Located in the Discount Clothing Store in Grapeseed you can purchase a jacket for Trevor, Frankin, or Michael that has a close resemblence to the jacket worn by Ryan Gosling in the movie Drive. Aptly named the “Champagne Driver Blouson.” it features the same diamond print pattern as the jacket in the movie but instead of the well known scorpion it has a golden crab – lovely.
2. Become Lost and find the hatch from LOST. *Spoiler Alert*
If you’re yet to watch the cult TV series directed by no other than J.J. Abrams where a plane crashes leaving a handful of people stranded on an island then I’m about to spoil Season 2 for you. The cast find a hatch which leads to an underground bunker filled with supplies. For the most part the hatch becomes an integral part of Season 2, enough for Rockstar to reference the hatch in GTA V.
Found deep underwater just off the coast of the San Chianski Mountain Range which is located to the east of the map you’ll find the hatch but you’ll die almost instantly if you try to approach it. Instead, observe it from a safe distance.
3. Get Meth’d up with Breaking Bad.
In Grand Theft Auto V there’s a plethora of Breaking Bad references and why not? A TV show based around the production and sale of Meth and a video game filled with drug use and gang violence go hand in hand! That and Breaking Bad is an awesome TV show. One of the more stand-out missions is from the Online part of the game, one particular mission requires you to steal an RV from some “hillbilly types” that are cooking meth a-la Breaking Bad.
There’s even a house that players can find in Banham Canyon near a construction site with a back yard that resembles Walter White’s suburban home.
4. Heeeeere’s Trevor!
Heading back to the Discount Clothing Store in Grapeseed you’ll find yourself another jacket amongst the collection of nearly-and-new clothing this time with the name “Overlooked Red Blouson” which when worn by Trevor gives the guy the uncanny appearance of Jack Nicholson in The Shining.
5. Shaken, not stirred.
My final tip of the hat movie reference is to everyone’s favourite British spy, James Bond. In Grand Theft Auto V players will come across a customized “JB 700” which will be armed with machine guns, tire spikes and a passenger ejector seat. The car itself is based off of a mixture of Aston Martin DB4, Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato and Aston Martin DB5 made famous in the 1964 movie Goldfinger.
So there we have it, my top five movie and TV show references from Grand Theft Auto V. If there’s any you’ve seen which should have got a mention leave a comment below!
