Cleaning the toilet is up there on most people’s list of disagreeable jobs. The thought of all that scrubbing is enough to deter the most hardened cleaner. With that in mind, we’ve put together a handy guide of our top-five bathroom cleaning tips to make light work of grime.
1. Tackle the toilet first
Nobody likes cleaning the toilet, but it has to be done. First, put on a pair of rubber gloves and remove any items that may be kept in the immediate area. Then pour in a cup of bleach, leave for twenty minutes and then flush with the lid down. Finally, use a toilet brush to scrub the inside of the rim. Be thorough, so you get all the germs. Wipe around the inside of the bowl once more with a soapy water solution, and flush once more with the lid down.
2. Use environmentally-friendly products
Always check bathroom products to make sure they don’t contain harmful petrochemicals that damage the environment. A spray solution comprising of equal parts water and vinegar is the ideal cleaning agent for counters, mirrors and any other reflective surface. Simply apply with a spray bottle and use a microfibre cloth to remove superficial dirt. Add some fresh lemon drops to take away the acrid aroma.
3. Make sure the room is properly ventilated
Turn on your extractor fan, open any windows that are accessible and leave the door open as you clean. Proper ventilation is crucial if you’re using chemical bleaches. Furthermore, it can prevent the build-up of mould and mildew that can aggravate respiratory conditions.
4. Focus on the shower and bath
It makes sense to pay a little extra attention to the shower and bath since this is where you get clean. Remove the shower curtain from the rail and leave to soak overnight in a salt bath. Attend to the shower head with the vinegar solution to make light work of mildew and guard against its reappearance.
If the sealant has fully disintegrated and water is soaking into the adjacent wall even after reapplication, then it may well be time for a new shower. When considering your options, it’s a good idea to choose someone that also offers a shower fitting service, as this will cut down on the maintenance work required later on.
5. Don’t forget bathroom accessories, door handles and other sneaky germ hideouts
A lot of people forget to clean the toothbrush holder, soap dispensers and other bathroom accessories, but these are all areas that germs like to congregate. Sponge with a warm soapy solution and scrub to a brilliant sheen. The same applies to the toilet flush and the door handle. Though it may sound odd, denture cleaner can be particularly effective when it comes to cleaning bathroom accessories.
It makes sense to clean the bathroom as thoroughly as possible to avoid the build-up of germs and make it a nicer place to be. Once you’re done, why not add a few DIY flourishes such as a dimmer switch to give the room a luxury feel?
