A weekend project that almost anybody can accomplish is replacing vinyl flooring. Vinyl can be bought in sheets or tiles and lasts a lifetime with proper care. Should you need to replace your vinyl floor because of damage or just the desire to refresh your bathroom’s look, follow the steps below and you will have a new floor in no time.
Step One
Remove the toilet and sink. Remove the baseboards around the room. These can be pried off the walls with a hammer.
Step Two
Use a putty knife to pry up one end of a strip of vinyl. Pull up the vinyl flooring one strip at a time. If the floor is full-bonded, meaning the entire floor is glued down instead of just around the edges, use the putty knife to loosen the length of strips of flooring.
Step Three
Use a putty knife to pry up one end of a strip of vinyl. Pull up the vinyl flooring one strip at a time. If the floor is full-bonded, meaning the entire floor is glued down instead of just around the edges, use the putty knife to loosen the length of strips of flooring.
Step Four
Remove loose adhesive from the sub-floor with a long handed chisel. You can also use a heat gun to soften the adhesive for easier removal. The floor should be smooth.
Step Five
Make a template of the bathroom floor using craft or butcher paper. Lay the paper out on the floor and cut small holes in the paper so you can tape the paper to the floor while marking the template. Using scissors, cut out the template of the bathroom floor.
Step Six
Cut the vinyl. Roll out the flooring and lay the template over the new flooring. Tape the template to the vinyl floor using the holes previously cut in the paper. Cut the new vinyl flooring according to the template.
Step Seven
Lay the cut vinyl floor in the bathroom to make sure that the fit will be good. Trim the vinyl floor if needed. Remove the vinyl from bathroom.
Step Eight
Spread adhesive on the floor using a metal trowel, backing out of the bathroom as you spread the adhesive.
Step Nine
Roll the floor with a 100 pound roller. Work from the center of the room out. Reinstall the toilet and sink. Replace the baseboards.
Step Ten
Unroll the new vinyl floor over the adhesive
