The worktop in any kitchen can become scratched, dented and sometimes burnt. Replacing your kitchen worktops is a good way to really freshen your kitchen without spending a lot of money. Laminate countertops are usually fairly inexpensive, are functional and look great. Replace your kitchen worktops with new laminate countertops for a quick, inexpensive remodel of your kitchen.
Step One
Turn off the water in your home. After the water is turned off you can disconnect the plumbing to your kitchen sink. Place a large bowl under the plumbing to catch the excess water while you disconnect the plumbing with a wrench.
Step Two
Unscrew the old laminate worktop with a screwdriver. Locate all of the screws under the countertop and use the screwdriver to remove the screws. Use a utility knife to break the line of old caulk along the back of the countertop next to the wall. Try to remove the countertop with the sink in place. If you cannot do this, run the utility knife along the edges of the sink to break the caulk. Disconnect the sink clips under the sink. Remove both the sink and the countertop.
Step Three
Apply a small bead of caulk on the top of the cabinets. Carefully set the new countertop in place on top of the caulk. Screw the new laminate worktop in place with the screws from the old countertop. Once set in place you can apply a bead of caulk along the back of the countertop where it meets the wall. Smooth the caulk with your finger. Let the caulk dry completely.
Step Four
Use a jigsaw to cut out the hole for the sink. Use the sink template to mark the hole in the worktop. Place clear tape over the marks to prevent chipping as you cut the laminate countertop. Drill a small hole in the corner of the marked template with a drill. Place the jigsaw into the hole and cut out the hole for the sink. Install the sink per manufacturer directions.
