Police reports show there’s been a rise in ‘lock snapping’ techniques year on year since 2009. According to the BBC 27% of all burglaries across the country involve lock snapping on Euro Profile cylinders.
Euro Profile cylinder locks are fitted to millions of properties, usually those with uPVC and composite doors. Lock snapping simply involves snapping the lock cylinder in two, by applying force, and removing the outer part to expose the lock mechanism. Doing so provides access to the mechanism, allowing the door to be unlocked without a key.
TS007 3 star Kitemark standard Euro Profile cylinders will provide you with the latest protection against cylinder attacks such as lock snapping and are recommended by Secured by Design, an official UK Police initiative, which supports the principles of ‘designing out crime’.
Upgrading your Euro Profile cylinder is a very quick and easy DIY job. In fact, all you need is five minutes and a screwdriver! There’s no need to change the entire lock or door, as you simply need to replace your existing cylinder with a British Standard TS007 Kitemark approved cylinder.
TS007:2012 is the industry standard developed in response to concerns over cylinder attacks. The standard is characterised by a 3 star rating system, and can be achieved by combining a 1 star cylinder with a 2 star security door furniture, or using a stand-alone 3 star cylinder.
Yale’s AS Platinum Series Euro Cylinder offers the highest level of British Kitemarked TS007:2012 3 star security, and therefore does not require any additional door security furniture. It has four separate lines of defence, offering an unrivalled level of security that will deter even the most determined intruder.
Once you have your new cylinder, insert the key and align the cam with the centre of the cylinder then place into the lock. Again, you may need to twist the key slightly to ensure the cylinder slots into the lock. It’s important to remember that the Anti-Snap cylinder does have an external side and an internal side, so make sure that these are the correct way round.
