Honeysuckle is a fast-growing vine that appears in the summer months. It produces orange and pink trumpet-shaped blooms that emit a strong, pleasant fragrance. Due to its rapid growth, many people consider it to be a weed. However, if the honeysuckle vine is properly trained, it can be a beautiful addition to any garden or landscape. The key to training a honeysuckle vine is to start when the vine is very young.
Step One
Dig a trench 6 to 12 inches behind the honeysuckle vines using a shovel. The trench should be at least 6 inches deep to properly support the trellis.
Step Two
Insert the trellis into the trench and fill in the hole with dirt. Use your feet to stomp down on the dirt near the base of the trellis to firmly pack it down.
Step Three
Cut 6-inch strips of gardening tape from the roll using scissors.
Step Four
Hold the honeysuckle vine up against the trellis and wrap one piece of tape around the base of the plant 6 inches above the ground. Cross the ends of the tape over each other and thread the tape through the trellis. Tie the ends in a knot at the back, making it tight enough to support the vine but not hold the vine directly against the trellis.
Step Five
Place additional pieces of tape at 6-inch intervals up the vine and then repeat the process to secure additional vines to the trellis.
Step Six
Check the tape once per week to ensure that it is not cutting into the honeysuckle vines. If the tape gets too tight, cut it off using scissors and apply a longer piece of tape to the vine.
Step Seven
Once the vine gets approximately 2 feet tall, begin weaving it through the trellis by inserting the top edge of the vine through the slats. Over time, the honeysuckle will naturally cling to the trellis and you can cut away all remaining pieces of gardening tape.
