Pond fountains can provide you with a beautiful landscape until they become green with algae or black with mould due to infrequent cleaning. Often, the pumps used to flow water through the fountain become clogged with algae and the water stops flowing. This can make a beautiful pond fountain look old and worn out. If your fountain resembles a green blob, clean it to restore its great looks.
Step One
Turn off the pump and drain the water from your fountain with a bucket or a drain hose.
Step Two
Fill a bucket of water with dish detergent and warm water. Scrub the surface of the fountain with a toothbrush and the soapy water until you remove all of the green algae and mineral deposits. The use of a toothbrush ensures you will not damage the surface of the stone in the fountain.
Step Three
Wipe the surface of the fountain with clean warm water to remove any soap residue from the surface of the fountain.
Step Four
Remove the pump from the fountain. The process for doing so depends on the manufacture of the fountain. Often the pump is located in an access panel at the base of the fountain or inside the pond.
Step Five
Disassemble the pump. Again, this process depends on the manufacturer of the pump. Follow the instructions supplied by the pump manufacturer. Often, there are only two or three pieces that come off the pump.
Step Six
Soak all of the pump components including the pump itself in a 50-50 mix of vinegar and water. This will break down the algae buildup on and in the pump. Hose off the pump to remove the vinegar and loose particles.
Step Seven
Assemble the pump and reconnect it to the fountain.
Step Eight
Fill the fountain with fresh water and turn it back on.
