Daffodils are perennial flowers that normally bloom early in the growing season. Daffodils are available in 16,000 varieties with colors ranging from white, yellow, red, green and pink and all the combinations in between. Due to their amazing number of varieties, they have been organized into 12 distinct categories based on their description and size, and then by petal color and cup color. Daffodils are available from local garden centers and sold online, although they are not usually shipped until fall. Flowers are smooth petaled, ruffled and even multilayered.
Step Two
Significance - One of the most effective ways of planting daffodils is referred to as "naturalizing." You can plant them in the fall along the edge of a fenced area and they will not only bloom early in the spring before the grass has to be mowed but they will also multiply into a larger and larger mass of flowers. Later, when the grass starts to grow and the flowers are past their blooming stage, the whole area can be mowed.
Step Three
Forced Blooming - Daffodils are a favorite for forcing into bloom indoors. If you place pebbles and water in a jar, add daffodil bulbs and place the jar in a sunny window, within a few weeks you will have blossoms. These bulbs can be planted outside where they can be renourished for the next season but cannot be forced again. You can plant daffodil bulbs in this way, year around.
Step Four
Displays - One of the largest displays in England is found at the Valley Gardens of Windsor Great Park. Thousands and thousands of bulbs cover the area in massive flows of colors and variations for a few weeks in spring. In Massachusetts, the Nantucket Daffodil festival features millions of daffodils in bloom. In Camden, Arkansas, 13 acres of daffodils have been planted in honor of a son's deployment in the Gulf War. Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, at the Longwood Gardens boasts rivers of daffodils in blooms for their flower shows.
Step Five
Considerations - If you were to decide to plant a single variety of daffodil each day until you had planted every variety known, it would take you only a little over 43 years to get through your project.
