Species of rhododendrons (ericaceae) — commonly known as azaleas — are members of the heath family. Rhododendrons are deciduous shrubs with white, pink or yellow flower clusters. All parts of rhododendrons are highly toxic and should not be ingested.
Step Two
In colder climates, rhododendrons should be transplanted in early spring. In warm climates, they should be transplanted from late summer to late fall. Rhododendrons should be planted as soon as possible after being removed from the ground. If the plant is in its soft growth stage, it should not be transplanted at all until it has developed more.
Step Three
Plant rhododendrons in soil rich with organic material. It may be difficult to transplant older plants whose roots have grown deep and intertwined with those of other plants.
