Buying camping gear can get pretty costly, especially if you are camping with a family. Making some of your own gear at home before you go on your next trip can help to keep the cost down. It is pretty easy to make your own sleeping bag.
Step One
Cut four pieces of nylon to desired size and shape of your sleeping bag. Be sure to add an extra inch or so when deciding on your sleeping bag size to allow for sewing seams. Remember it is better to make your sleeping bag a little too big than too small, leave plenty of room inside for you to be able to move your legs and feet.
Step Two
Sew two of the pieces of nylon together on three sides, leaving the top open. Then do the same with the other two pieces. You now have two nylon sacks.
Step Three
Turn both of the nylon sacks inside out to hide the stitching.
Step Four
Measure your nylon sacks carefully and then cut two layers of insulation the same size as your sacks. Slide one piece of insulation into each sack and then sew the tops closed.
Step Five
Hand quilt or stitch the insulation into the nylong lining. Make horizonal stitches or quilts around twelve inches apart. This spacing will allow the insulation to pull inside your sleeping bag.
Step Six
Stitch the two insulated panels together on three sides to create your sleeping bag. When sewing the edges together take care to make sure that you get the insulation into the stitching as well for extra reinforcement. After sewing turn the sleeping bag inside out to hide the stitching.
Step Seven
Fold back and stitch a hem on the top edge of the bag all the way around to create a tunnel for the drawstring cord if you want a drawstring on your sleeping bag. Use a pin to work the cord through the hem.
