What is Engineered flooring?
Engineered wood floors comprise of a top layer of solid hard wood bonded with a modern adhesive onto a plywood base.
The plywood gives the floor board stability comprising of slices of
hardwood approx. 2mm thick, bonded together under high pressure. Engineered floors look no different to a solid wood floor once fitted, the advantages are that they are much more stable and can tolerate a greater tolerance and fluctuation of temperatures and moisture levels.
Engineered wood flooring is available in many different styles and finishes and is now having increased preference to the solid wood flooring due to the need to reduce deforestation, as engineered wood flooring uses around 75% less of the slow growing hardwoods, thus helps the environment, and budget friendly.
Types of Engineered flooring
There are basically three basic elements of engineered floors.
- A cross ply birch plywood back
- A Sandwich Board, where the plank is made from one species of tree: ie oak or walnut
- A Poplar back, which comprises of two layers of poplar, making a less expensive engineered board. Mainly used where there is not much high use or footfall, ie domestic or small office
This type of flooring gives greater support and gives a look and feel of real hardwood at a more accessible price.

Ideally used for both domestic and commercial environments. Due to the structure this engineered flooring is ideal for a damper environment such as bathroom or Kitchen. Hard waring for walkways etc. You can even use with underfloor heating. Ideal for uneven surfaces or glued down.

- You can discreetly nail or screw directing to a plywood subfloor or onto the joists.
- Using a recommended adhesive from the flooring manufacturer you could glue directly to a concrete screed or chipboard.
- When laying onto underfloor heating, use the recommended manufacturers glue and recommendations laying the boards onto the underlay or electric heating mat
How to Maintain Walnut Wood Flooring?
A few simple steps will help care for your new walnut wood flooring.
Maintain a regular cleaning regime, keep clean from debris to prevent scratches. Use the correct cleaning products and always mop up spills immediately, to prevent staining especially from chemical spills. If using a vacuum, make sure light weight as bristle bars may cause scratching.
Fit soft pads under furniture ie table legs and plant pots. Avoid walking on the floor with high heeled shoes.
