The main feature of a platform lift is to provide easy access for people who find it difficult to climb stairs. A platform lift is reasonably priced and its cost is relatively low in comparison to that of a conventional lift. They are reliable, safe, quiet, economical and require very little regarding space/building works. Most platform lifts are controlled by electrical inputs from the call buttons. There are three main types of drive systems used to operate platform lifts:
- Screw and Nut drive system – this is operated by attaching a nut to a screw that is connected to the motor of the platform lift. The motor turns the nut and allows the lift to move up and down.
- Encapsulated Chain drive system – this method involves chains being attached to each side of the platform lift. As the motor turns the drive-shaft, the chains are pushed or pulled, causing the lift to move up and down.
- Hydraulic drive system – with this system, the lift is connected to a hydraulic ram. Hydraulic fluid is pushed from a reservoir unit into the ram in order to move the lift. When the lift goes up, the ram extends and when the lift goes down, the flow is reversed.
The cost of your lift will depend on many different factors. The two main things to consider are the cost of the lift itself and the cost of any renovations required for the lift. Also, any extra features could increase the price – for example, glazing rather than plain panels, the size of shaft you require and any extra personalization that catches your eye. However, as mentioned previously, the price of platform lifts are much less than conventional lifts.
A platform lift comes in many different models. These include:
- The Shaftway model – which can fit within existing walls and is useful in both public establishments and residential houses.
- The Opal model – which has a platform enclosed with walls along with an open ceiling.
- The Stage model – which is commonly used for shorter distances such as vehicles/stages.
Whatever platform lift you choose will offer you quick and convenient access without you having to leave your wheelchair, ensuring that getting around is much easier.
