It is standard practice for architects and building contractors to build houses and estates. But some people prefer to purchase land to design and build their own homes, especially when dreaming of living in a castle style house. So providing the necessary research is carried out in terms of building regulations; any person with an idea in mind can become his or her own architect.
Step One
Decide on a realistic budget for your castle house project. There is no point designing an extravagantly expensive castle style house if you cannot afford to build it.
Step Two
Find out about building rules and regulations in your area by contacting your local building authority. For instance, house height restrictions may apply, which could limit the design of your castle style house, particularly if you want high walls, towers and turrets.
Step Three
Establish how many rooms you will need to know how many stories to include in your castle house design.
Step Four
Research castle style features. Look in books or find postcards about castles to give you some ideas for potential designs.
Step Five
Design the shape for the front facade. Draw a basic square or rectangular shape for the body of the house onto square-ruled paper with a pencil and ruler. Use the grid square as a scale reference so that each square represents a certain number of feet in height or length.
Step Six
Fill in some castle style features into the design. Decide if you want either square or round tower structures with small turrets, as well as battlements to be incorporated within the castle house design. If so, sketch them in but be aware of building regulations regarding height restrictions. Position a large square or arched doorway at the center of the building. Add portcullis style features into the design of the door if desired. Design some castle style windows and place them in a symmetrical or random sequence. It would not be practical for a house to have all arrow-slit windows as it would be too dark but they could be used sparingly as special design features of the house.
Step Seven
Fill in the pencil outlines of your house design in a fine black art marker. Erase the pencil lines.
Step Eight
Repeat this process to draw designs for the side and back view of the castle style house.
Step Nine
Design the floor plans. Draw the basic surrounding shape of the house. Create wall panels to define the shape and placement of each room. Doors are detailed as open gaps. Sketch basic internal objects in the rooms, like bathroom and kitchen facilities. Place rooms that require a water source beside a wall that is to be piped for plumbing. Include details of positioning of indoor castle style columns or significant castle style features. Ensure that each room is drawn to scale. Specify the scale chart on the page. Write down the name of each room to complete your floor plan.
