Rust is a type of corrosion that affects metals like iron and steel which are categorized as ferrous metals. Typically rust will start to occur at 40 percent humidity. Rust can occur in many areas of your home. It is best to treat metals by sealing them with paint, lacquer or wax or by replacing metal hardware before the rust can spread.
Keep metal dry to prevent rust from forming. Dry metal with an old towel and wipe down the object often. Keep water and humidity away from the metal.
Remove any existing rust from the object before you treat the metal to keep more rust from forming. Take off the rust with a rust remover product or scrub the rust away with steel wool.
Apply primer to the metal with a clean paint brush, then apply paint to protect it from corrosion. Paint works well for iron and steel metals.
Treat copper and aluminum with a wax or lacquer coating to protect the metal from rust.
Allow the treatment to dry and apply a second coat if necessary.
