A washing machine pump is hooked to the drain line on the bottom, to dispose of soiled water, while the top half brings in and circulates fresh water from the water supply. Over time, the washing machine pump will get soiled with backwash or tiny bits of debris that may affect its performance. Most washing machines are installed with a pump filter which you can be remove and wash, making the task of cleaning the pump a quick part of regular maintenance.
Pull off the access panel on the front of the machine by pulling it forward. Some machines have an access panel that is attached with screws or has a locking mechanism.
Turn the pump filter counterclockwise until it releases from the machine. Pull it out.
