I know… your thinking… but you need energy to heat up the water, well your right, but water is a far better medium for transferring heat from one place to another than air, that’s why your radiator circuit has water in it, not air. So using hot water is far less offensive than a hair dryer, particularly if you have solar, wood pellet, or Natural gas heating. Hot water can be faster than cold if you are careful that you don’t put it in too fast, otherwise it is wasted.
Step One
Remove all food from the freezer and put it in an insulated ice chest, the coldest part of your house or in a friendly neighbor's freezer.
Step Two
Turn the unit off if there is a switch, otherwise unplug it to start the defrosting process. If the freezer has a drip tray, check to make sure it's in place.
Step Three
Put old bath towels around the floor of the freezer to sop up any water that overflows.
Step Four
Boil a couple of pans of water and put them inside the unit. Close the freezer door to keep the heat inside. Replace the boiling water as it cools down to keep the temperature inside the freezer raised.
Step Five
Soak up the melting water with towels as the freezer continues to defrost. When large pieces of ice come free, pull them out and dump them into the sink. As the defrosting progresses, you will have to work fast to keep up with the moisture.
