The last place you want to slip and slide when you sit down is on the toilet. A loose toilet seat can cause you to inadvertently land in the toilet or on the floor, neither of which is an attractive option. Not only is a wobbly toilet seat uncomfortable — it’s downright dangerous. In order to ensure the safety of your family and friends who visit your home, take time to secure your toilet seat as soon as you notice it’s worked its way loose.
Step One
Close the toilet lid and locate the plastic covers that hide the bolts that hold your toilet seat in place.
Step Two
Pop the plastic bolt covers up so that you can see the bolts. Most covers have a hinge in the back and come open in the front. You should be able to easily pop them up with a fingernail or the tip of a flat-head screwdriver.
Step Three
Reach underneath the toilet and hold the nut firmly with your fingers or a pair of pliers. At the same time, insert a flat-head screwdriver into the slot in the bolt and tighten it in a clockwise direction. Perform this procedure on both bolts. Snap the covers back into place when finished.
Step Four
Check the horizontal pins that secure the toilet seat as well, by lifting the lid but keeping the seat down. Occasionally, these pins may work partially or completely loose, causing your toilet seat to wobble.
Step Five
Align the hinged areas and push the loose pin back into place firmly with your fingers. If you need additional leverage, use a hammer to gently tap the pins securely into place.
