Shower pump not starting? Find out what to do with this simple Letsfixit guide.
Pump Running but no difference in flow. - Have you got air trapped in the pump? If you fit the pump on a vertical pipe the SPB cannot trap air. If fitted on a horizontal pump and the pump barrel is above the centre line of the brass fitting there is a danger of a pocket of air in the pump volute. If you have a pump for gravity systems you should be able to see through the pipe to tell if air is present. The solution can be very simple – loosen the compression joints, rotate the brass fitting so that the pump volute is no longer a high point – tighten the joints again.
Pump running but very little difference in flow - Have you fitted the pump the wrong side of the vent pipe? From the top of the hot water cylinder is a 22mm copper pipe which normally runs horizontal before it splits. One pipe goes up to the cold water tank in the loft – this is the expansion pipe and it is required by law.If you fit the pipe between the top of the cylinder and the vent/expansion pipe all you will achieve is about 600mm in extra head and you will be sending hot water into your cold tank. You need to fit the SPB on the pipe feeding the shower or taps after the vent pipe.
Pump Running but very little difference in flow - The pump will work with most mixer taps but a small number of shower and tap mixers need a huge amount of pressure to work. A typical shower mixer (manual or automatic) will need 1 metre head (0.1 bar), to work. When SPB adds a further 3 metres head then you have 4 metres head which is 4 times the minimum – A GREAT SHOWER. It is possible to buy shower mixers which need a minimum of 5 metres head (0.5 bar) and I have even come across a customer who bought a tap which needed 2 bars (20 metres head).These high pressure mixers were developed for the European Market where many have showers running off mains pressure.
