When it comes to drilling into cement, tile, stone or other hard materials, a masonry bit is the right tool for the job. Using a masonry drill bit correctly first involves selecting the correct bit for the surface you plan to drill. Most masonry bits also require a high-power drill; a corded power drill rather than a cordless model will provide the torque and speed required for masonry work although suitable cordless models are now available.
Select a masonry bit based on the size of hole required, the length needed and also the type of material into which you need to drill. Hammer drills may use different chuck systems. Check the drill's manual for chuck information. Check the packaging of drill bits for recommendations of what materials they are designed for, and ask for help from a hardware store associate if needed.
Loosen the chuck on the drill to accommodate the drill bit and insert the blunt side of the bit into the chuck. Tighten the chuck with a chuck key or by twisting the two parts of the chuck against each other by hand, depending on your model of drill.
Mark the location for your hole on the surface you intend to drill and place the drill bit against the mark.
Gripping the drill firmly with both hands, pull the trigger and apply light pressure to the surface until the bit begins to work into the surface. Apply more pressure or more speed if necessary. It may also help to work the bit in and out of the hole while spinning. This can help get loose material out of the way.
Stop periodically to check whether the proper depth has been reached. Measure the dust on the drill bit for a general idea of the depth of the hole.
