Definition - A cable tester is a device used to validate a cable's electrical connections. Cable testers are also used to verify that no unintended electrical connections are carried through a particular cable.
Step Two
Parts - Typical cable testers contain such parts as a source of electrical current, a voltmeter, or instrument used to measure electrical differences between points in a circuit, and a switching matrix. The switching matrix, a device that allows wires to be rerouted, connects the voltmeter and electricity from the cable tester to the cable's contact points.
Step Three
Process - Cable testers can check a cable connection by running a resistance test or a continuity test. During a resistance test, a verified current is passed down the cable connection. The voltage through this connection is then measured and compared to acceptable values. A continuity test involves running current down the connection. If the current flows through the entire cable, the connection is verified. This test is often performed via a connected light bulb. The bulb lights if there is an unbroken current.
