Sharpening drill bits is an essential skill to learn if you are going to be consistently building and remodelling around the house. Bench grinders have become extremely inexpensive and can provide a cheap and easy way to sharpen your masonry bits at home. While it may sound like a difficult process, it is actually quite simple if you follow proper guidelines and instructions.
Step One
Grind the point angle. With your feet apart, stand slightly to the left of the grinding wheel and hold the drill about 1/4 of the way along from the point using your thumb and forefinger. Use the other hand to hold the drill at its shank.
Step Two
Hold the drill so it is horizontal but hits the grinding wheel at approximately a 60 degree angle. Rotate the drill slowly so that the cutting wheel is parallel and close to the wheel. Use your left hand to swing the shank of the drill down and to the left, while using the right hand to slowly roll the drill clockwise.
Step Three
Ground the other face of the drill bit and make sure the point angle is symmetrical and centred. Use only slight pressure and pause every 30 seconds to let the drill tip cool down. Continue this process until the masonry drill bit is sharpened to your liking. Congratulations, you have successfully sharpened your masonry drill bit.
