Creating a cherry rum drink is simply a matter of being creative and knowing what flavors mix well together. Cherry rum drinks are made with cherry rum or by adding another cherry-flavored alcohol to rum. To make cherry rum, wild cherries are soaked in rum for about a week. Once the flavors have had time to mingle, sugar is added, then everything is stirred and strained.
Step One
Cherry Rum Drinks - The easiest way to make a cherry rum drink is to use cherry rum. During the warm summer months, adding cherry rum to a drink can give fruity drinks a new twist. To make sure the cherry flavor doesn't completely overpower the other flavors in the drink, add equal parts cherry rum and a regular rum (whatever rum you like best). Orange, lime, apple, lemon and pineapple juices all mix well with cherry rum. In most cherry rum drinks, the cocktail is combined in 4 parts. For example, mix 1 part cherry rum with 1 part light rum and 2 parts pineapple juice in a highball glass over ice. To give it a bubbly effect, add a small splash of ginger ale.
Step Two
Rum and Cherry Alcohol Drinks - Even if you don't have any cherry rum in your liquor cabinet you can still make cherry rum drinks. Brandy, vodka and schnapps are available in cherry flavors. The most common drink made this way is a simple cherry rum cocktail. In a cocktail glass mix together 1 1/4 oz. light rum, 1 1/2 oz. cherry brandy and 1 tbsp. light cream. Serve it with ice and an orange on the rim. The classic rum and cola can also be given a cherry rum flavor. Instead of adding 2 oz. of rum to a glass of cola, put in 1 oz. of rum and 1 oz. of cherry schnapps, then add ice.
Step Three
Cherry Rum Punch - Cherry rum drinks can also be served in punch form. To make a large batch, in a large punch bowl mix: 4 oz. champagne, 4 oz. crème de cassis, 4 oz. orange juice, 2 oz. 151 proof rum, 24 ounces light rum, 4 oz. dark rum, 8 oz. sour mix, 34 oz. maraschino cherries. After stirring, slice two limes very thinly and place in the bowl along with a block of ice. This punch should be chilled for at least an hour before serving to allow the flavors to mingle. When you're ready to serve it, add a quart of club soda to the punch.
