WRUP You Think You're so pretty Edition We all want to appear pretty. Let's just come right out and say that we'd like to be beautiful. Unfortunately, if all of us were really searingly pretty, we would probably not all stay in our homes and play video games. For instance this writer looks more like a chimpanzee-slime hybrid from the Dragon Quest series than a butterfly. Sometimes reality can be very harsh. Of course, in order to deal with the harsh reality we all have our preferred MMOs to play when the opportunity presents itself -like, for instance, with this week's WRUP. In light of the recent success of the quasi-MMO Minecraft We decided to ask everyone what it was important to have the games they play be pretty. Take a look past the cut for our answers and tell us in the comments what you're going to be playing over the weekend! Beau Hindman (@Beau_Hindman): I'll be playing DIGDIGDIG little bit of DIGDIGDIGDIG everything, and need to get ready to leave for DIGDIGDIG GDC. I might get DIGDIG some time to DIGDIGDIGDIGDIG play a bit of Minecraft as well. Graphics? Nah. It's the game that matters. Brianna Royce (@nbrianna). I go back to my earlier WRUPs and realize that I am so boring... I am still having fun in City of Heroes. I guess I'm trying to get it to dry because I am sure that once Cataclysm comes out, my guild will take off! I recently bought an all-new tanker and wow -- now I can remember why I normally stick to controllers. I'm not a graphics snob as I play a lot older games. I've even considered playing the new Ultima Online boats expansion. However, a game must contain something to offset the bad stuff, a nugget of nostalgia or a brilliant stroke of gameplay or riveting story. What happens if the game is stunning but has terrible gameplay? I'm not even going to give it a second thought. Edward Marshall: If I have the time, I'll play Fallen Earth. Graphics aren’t very important to me. In this day and age , I expect better than ASCII at the very minimum. Eliot Lefebvre: Final Fantasy XIV, naturally. I can't enjoy enough of Final Fantasy XIV at the moment. I'm currently trying to find myself some more powerful weapons and armor which is a slow process but a lot of fun for the way it's presented. I am also thinking about taking some time offline to look through my vast collection of console games. Simple graphics don't bother me, but there needs to be a purpose behind them. Graphics that are stylized are quite different from games that look simple and unappealing. International Directory The line between "stylized", and "bad" is extremely subjective. Greg Waller: I have been focusing all of my time and energy on WAR lately and I intend to keep this trend going throughout the weekend as my new zealot battles Badlands through Tier 3. Concerning the bonus question: Eye candy is not a good game make. I can tolerate low-quality graphics if the gameplay is superior. Jef Reahard: I will be playing Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, specifically the song 2112 of Rush, since I just enjoyed breaking my eardrums live at Atlanta last night. Yes music games are a thing of 2007. But whatever. If I manage to play any MMOs, it will be my standard AoC/EQII and an occasional side dish of FFXIV. Krystalle Voecks (@Krystalle): I'm reinstalling everything after I upgraded my desktop, so I foresee numerous, many, hours of download and install fun this weekend. In addition, it's more Vanguard for me and some time spent with the old Masquerade WoD sourcebooks. In terms of graphics, let's face it: we love pretty. One Shots is a fantastic example of this. However, I don't believe it's the only way to play games. Minecraft is successful because it's fun and lets people express their creativity, not because it's visually stunning. Lisa Poisso, @emused: We were looking at old WoW alts and decided to create the new race/class combination for Cataclysm. In terms of graphics, I wasn't sure they were as important to me as they are until I revisited original EQ recently. If EverQuest's graphics were up to the standards of today, I'd play it over the blink of an eye, but as-is the graphics are a huge turnoff. Patrick Mackey: I'm having some crashing issues with my desktop right now, but assuming it works, I will be playing World of Tanks. I'll be spending some time playing Champions as well. I heard through the grapevine that Demonflame will be released on PTS Friday. StarCraft II is played at the lowest graphics settings. However, Minecraft fails because things aren't clearly visible in the game. Visuals are used to let the player know what's happening in the game, and if it's not clear, the art designers have failed.
