With so many of us being animal lovers in the UK, you may be wanting to know how to create a
comfortable and safe area for your pooch. Here are a few things to consider if you want to make a
dedicated space for your furry friend and it is a lot easier than you think!
Choose your space
When choosing a space indoors to dedicate to your dog you first need to consider whether you can
accommodate a whole room just for them or if you will be breaking off an area in one of your main
living areas.
The ideal space will be relatively quiet with not too much footfall so that your dog feels
that it is a place to relax. However, as dogs are very sociable animals, you don’t want somewhere
that is too far away from anyone, at risk of them feeling isolated and alone.
Some great places in your home that you could consider are the laundry room, space under the stairs,
a utility room or even a whole room like an office space if you have the capacity!
Kit it out
Once you have chosen your space, you need to kit it out with things to keep them entertained and
comfortable.
To reduce the risk of your dog being destructive in the home you should provide them with toys to
keep them stimulated.
For strong chewers, Kong toys are a great recommendation and you can fill
them with healthy treats like yoghurt or even just add their regular kibble as a way to keep them
engaged during mealtimes.
You always need to provide your dog with fresh water during the day,
even if you aren’t in the home so having food and water bowls in your dog’s space is a necessity.
You will also want to invest in a comfortable space for them to sleep, perhaps consider a luxury dog
bed as well as a crate if you are crate training your pooch.
If you have a puppy or an older dog who
may be becoming slightly incontinent, puppy pads are a great way to keep your floors clean
especially if you have carpets.
Puppy-proof the area
Regardless of whether you have a young, energetic puppy or an older, more relaxed dog, you should
ensure that any areas where they will be left unsupervised are safe.
A great way to evaluate your home for dog safety is to look at the space from your dog’s point of
view – larger dogs may be the perfect height to grab jewellery off your bedside table or knock a lamp
off the coffee table so take this into account.
You should also look to tape up any wires that are on
display at risk of your furry friends chewing through them and remove any toxins from the area, such
as plants, medication and cleaning products.
