A carrick bend (also known as a Sailor’s Knot, Sailor’s Hitch, Josephine Knot, Sailor’s Bend, or Anchor Bend) is a simple, jam-proof knot that is most commonly used to append a shorter piece of rope or cable to a longer one. This knot is particularly effective for rope that is too large or stiff for other knots. It has an excellent grip under all circumstances (wet or oily conditions, etc.) and is also exceptionally easy to untie.
Take the shorter end and loop it over the longer end, pulling it up straight.
Move the shorter end down, underneath the point where the rope initially crossed to make your first loop.
