Change the shock absorbers on your Land Rover to keep your ride smooth while you are driving. Without the shocks you would feel every bump that your Land Rover drives over. Changing the shocks is time-consuming, and you will need the right tools and preparation. You can purchase the shocks for your specific Land Rover and the type of terrain that you will be driving on from your Land Rover dealer or online if you need custom shocks for your model.
Removing the Front Shocks on a Land Rover – Loosen the lug nuts on the tire with the tire iron. Raise the front of the Land Rover with the jack and take off the tire. Place jack stands under the Land Rover at the support points and lower the Land Rover onto the stand. Do this to both sides of the front of the Land Rover. Raise the rear of the Land Rover with the jack and place jack stands under the Land Rover at the support points on both sides. Now the Land Rover is completely off of the ground, allowing you to get under the vehicle.
Remove the nuts that connect the shock to the frame at the top of the shock with a wrench. Remove the nuts that are connecting the shock to the lower control arm and slide the shock out of its place. Remove the washer and bushing from the top mounting place and the lower control arm.
Insert the new washer and bushing to the top and bottom mounting points. Slide the new shock into place and replace the nuts that connect it to the frame on top and the lower control arm at the bottom. Tighten the nuts, securing the shock back into place.
Replace the tire onto the frame. Replace the lug nuts onto the tire. Tighten the lug nuts with the tire iron.
Removing the Rear Shocks on a Land Rover – Place the jack under the axle on the side that you are changing the shock on. Raise the axle slightly to support the weight of the axle.
Remove the nuts that are connecting the shock to the frame at the top of the shock with a wrench. Remove the nuts that are connecting the shock to the axle with a wrench. Pull the shock from the mounting points. Place the new shock in the mounting point and replace the nuts at the top and bottom of the shock. Tighten the nuts with a wrench.
Replace the tire and lug nuts, then lower the Land Rover back onto the ground. Tighten the lug nuts with the tire iron.
